Crime Trends over the Past Few Years

Welcome back! Today I will be talking about the recent crime data over the past few years. The website I am using for reference is the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Uniformed Crime Report (UCR), which is all the statistics involving crime in the United States. The UCR is very helpful when wanting to use data, due to the FBI collecting data from every law enforcement agency in the United States.

Without using the website and viewing the official statistics, the mainstream media likes to make claims that crimes are on the increase, or they may just completely avoid talking about this because it is not exciting to talk about. They do this in order to get shock value out of their articles. If CNN or FOX News were to say this, it would be overlooked due to the lack of deviance in the behavior.

The Crime Data Explorer (CDE) is a website you can use, that shows the UCR stats in a more simplified and easier to understand style. Below is the link for the website I will be using to provide statistics and a simplified view on this.

CDE

After viewing the CDE data for 2023, it shows that violent crimes are down about 3 percent. Murder specifically is down about 11.5% from 2022 to 2023, which is a significant drop. Rape is also down about 9.5 percent since 2022. Each year since 2020, the crimes have been dropping considerably. This is an interesting trend, considering we hear more and more about violent crime in the media. It makes you wonder what effects Covid has had on crime.

The CDE data for 2023, it shows that property crime has dropped about 2.5 percent. Burglary has dropped 7.5% from 2022 to 2023, which is an interesting trend. Motor vehicle thefts, however, have increased about 12.5% from 2022 to 2023.

Overall, the crime statistics would show you that the world has become increasingly safer with the lowered crime rates. I enjoy going through this website from time to time to see how different crimes tend to change throughout time.
